JOB SUMMARY
VECRA, Inc. has a requirement for several Braille/Tactile Signing Interpreters to provide In-person, telephonic, and video conference translator and interpreter services at various locations in the Continental United States (CONUS). Interpreters will provide medical interpretation and translation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients and their families. The Interpreter will follow HIPAA Laws and hold the patient’s information in the strictest of confidence. Interpreters are needed in the following geographic regions:
- Texas, Eastern New Mexico
- Montana, Wyoming, Eastern Idaho, Eastern Nevada, Utah, and Colorado
- Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska
- Northern California, Nevada, Hawaii Islands, Philippines Islands, Guam, and American Samoa
- Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Southern Colorado
- Be familiar with the Unified English Braille System and rules of braille transcribing and be familiar with the Nemeth Code of Braille Mathematics and Scientific Notation.
- Machine translation will not be used.
- Contractors shall be punctual and present at relevant proceedings, demonstrate a professional demeanor, and provide all the necessary equipment and materials to perform their duties.
- Be willing to complete ASL (American Sign Language) assessment by as Certified ASL Professional (exceptions can be made with proven work history and certifications).
- Complete all required documents in a timely manner.
- Flexibility to work in different settings and adapt to various work environments.
- Must be located in and authorized to work in the US (We do not offer visa sponsorship).
- Interpreters may be expected to perform a combination of In-Person Services, Telephonic and Video Conference Services, Document Translation Services, and Records Management.
IN-PERSON SERVICES
- The Interpreters must be capable of providing in-person services when ordered.
- The Interpreters must be prompt, reliable, and professional in demeanor and dress.
- The Interpreters shall arrive at the facility-designated location for in-person services 15 minutes early for the scheduled meeting.
TELEPHONIC AND VIDEO CONFERENCE SERVICES
- Interpreters must be capable of handling multiple participants at once.
- Interpreters must be prompt and able to be online within minutes to meet with VA staff
DOCUMENT TRANSLATION SERVICES
Interpreters shall be capable of providing document translation services from English to the required language to facilitate patient and patient’s family understanding. RECORDS MANAGEMENT
- Interpreters must have in their possession a cross-cut paper shredder.
- Upon completion of telephonic or video conference interpretation, Interpreters must immediately destroy VA sensitive information they may have written down,
QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIRED SKILLS:
- 3-4 years interpreting preferably medical interpreting required
- Ability to identify and address obstacles to high-quality patient care and satisfaction; diffuse stressful situations; and to work in multi-culturally diverse environment
- Knowledge of medical terminology required
- Well-developed listening interpretative and conciliation skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word Excel Outlook and TEAMs
- Exhibit proficiency in ASL (American Sign Language)
- Each interpreter or translator must know how to translate medical terminology to ensure exact understanding of treatments, procedures, medication names / dosage requirements, and other instructions required for care of the veteran patient, or for obtaining informed consent.
- Each interpreter or translator MUST possess linguistic proficiency in English and the language to be serviced.
- Must meet all qualifications and certifications as required by state and/or federal law.
- A qualified translator or interpreter is defined as a vendor’s in-house or contracted translator or interpreter who is competent to interpret or translate as demonstrated through accreditation by State Interpreter Certification/National Center for State Courts, the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, National Council on Interpreting in Health Care Certification, or Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR), or equivalent certifying agency.
- Contractors shall be punctual and present at relevant proceedings, demonstrate a professional demeanor, and provide all the necessary equipment and materials to perform their duties.
- Interpreter must be able to be available on short/no notice given less than 48 hours prior to the service being required.
EDUCATION
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- State Interpreter Certification/National Center for State Courts
- National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters
- National Council on Interpreting in Health Care Certification, or
- Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR), or equivalent certifying agency
- Work Authorization: Must be authorized to work in the United States.
- Schedule: Monday – Friday
- Work Hours: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday in the time zone of the facility, excluding federal holidays. Each TO will specify the time coverage required and what (if any) advance notice conditions apply.
- Shift: Varies; TOs may require services to be available 24/7/365 days a week to include all Federal Holidays. VA Emergency Departments normally operate with 24-hour coverage.

- Parking is allowed only in areas not designated for patient use.
- Telework or Virtual: Minimal remote work (10%); Onsite work will be required (90%)
